Frequently asked questions

Profit margin is your gross profit divided by your selling price, as a percentage: (price − cost) ÷ price × 100. For example, an item that costs 40 and sells for 100 has a 60 profit and a 60% margin. Enter your cost and price above and the calculator works it out for you, along with the markup.

Margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price, while markup is profit as a percentage of the cost. The same 40 → 100 item is a 60% margin but a 150% markup (60 profit ÷ 40 cost). Markup is always the larger number, which is why the two are easy to mix up.

Switch to the target-margin mode, enter your cost and the margin you want, and the calculator returns the selling price using price = cost ÷ (1 − margin). A margin of 100% is impossible because it would require an infinite price, so keep the target below 100%.
